Talks

I speak at conferences, leadership summits, company gatherings and management meetings.

The aim is not just to boost the mood. It is to offer fresh answers to familiar questions: why capable people lose clarity under pressure, why leaders hear less than they think, and why great service takes much more than standards.

The talks draw on five decades in hospitality, working with more than 30 hotel companies across 20 countries. The ideas are practical, the stories are real and the humour is close to the surface.

Topics

Less Friction. More Flow.

Performance does not depend on ability alone. It also depends on how much of that ability is obscured by pressure, fear, ego and friction. Building on Timothy Gallwey’s formula, Performance = Potential − Interference, this talk shows why removing interference often does more than adding another technique.

Thinking Clearly Under Pressure

Why intelligent, experienced people sometimes make poor decisions when the pressure rises, including the particular strain of not knowing what happens next. This talk shows how to recognise the change in your own thinking, and what allows good judgement to return.

What People Don’t Tell the Boss

The more senior a leader becomes, the more carefully people manage what they say. This talk looks at the blind spots that follow, how to read a room more accurately, and how leaders can make it safer for people to tell them what they need to know.

What Really Drives Great Service

Standards are necessary, but they do not produce warmth, judgement or genuine care. Five-star service cannot be delivered from a three-star state. This talk looks at the conditions leaders create, and why those conditions shape the service guests actually experience.

Who Do You Think You Are?

A talk about self-awareness, blind spots and the role they play in leadership, relationships and decision-making.

Bringing Out the Best in People

Exploring the conditions that allow people to contribute more of their intelligence, judgement, confidence and capability.

High-Trust Teamwork

How trust, communication and alignment reduce friction and help colleagues work together more effectively.

Formats

Every audience is different, and the right talk depends on the occasion.

A keynote may need to challenge people to think differently. A leadership meeting may call for a fresh perspective on a difficult issue. An off-site may benefit from something thoughtful, practical and engaging that opens up a deeper conversation.

Depending on the context and tone of the occasion, a talk can be insightful, entertaining, uplifting, provocative or practical — or several of those at once.

Talks can be selected from existing themes or developed specifically for the audience, organisation and occasion.

Each of the talks above is available in both 45-minute and 90-minute versions. The 90-minute sessions allow more time for audience interaction, Q&A, discussion and practical application.

Several talks can also be combined or expanded into half-day or full-day workshops for leadership retreats, management off-sites and teamwork events.

Talks based on A Handbook for Hoteliers (and other humans)

The book provides the basis for a range of talks and facilitated sessions on leadership, pressure, listening, decision-making, relationships and human performance.

A practical session can also be built around how to use the book as an ongoing tool for leadership and team development. The session can introduce the key themes, explain the suggested reading paths, and show teams how to use individual chapters to generate reflection, discussion and practical application.

Copies of the book can be included for participants.

If you are considering a talk, tell me about the audience, the occasion and what you would like people to leave thinking, feeling or doing differently. We can then shape the session around what would be most useful.
